HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS AND DANGEROUS GOODS
The behaviour of hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods when released into the environment by human activities is complex. It is therefore challenging (and can be very expensive) to manage the potential impacts on the surrounding environmental systems including people and their communities. Tighter legislation in Australia and alignment with the UN's Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) are driving improved management of hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Reducing chemical use where possible, implementing sound storage and handling practices, training employees to know how to protect themselves and the environment, and appropriately managing chemical wastes are all key to sustainable hazardous chemical and dangerous goods management.
